Mallards in superb battling performance Ballinamallard Youth were unlucky not to leave the Mid Ulster Sports Arena with all three points on Friday evening.
The young Mallards found themselves two goals up at the half time interval but two fortuitous goals from Magherafelt left both sides leaving with a share of the spoils.
It was far from ideal preparations for the Mallards as the fixture kicked off at 6.30pm, leaving them little time to warm up.
The young Mallards were lucky to survive an opening onslaught from the home side. Keeper Noble, skipper Smyth and Joshua Toal were to the fore as they kept the home side at bay.
Indeed Smyth and Toal were both in the wars as they clashed heads. The pair battled on bravely despite the collision.
The away side slowly got themselves back into the tie, Keaney and McGrath were working the flanks well and the midfield trio of Holder, Owens and Irvine were superb in the first half. Holder in particular was his usual combative self.
Irvine soon gave the young Mallards the lead when he pounced on a mistake in the box. Keaney worked his way down the left and Irvine made no mistake in slamming the ball past the helpless net minder.
It was two nil shortly after, once again Keaney combined well with centre forward Browne. Browne had his effort parried by the Sky Blues keeper and Irvine once again was on hand to apply the finishing touches.
However, the half time interval seemed to disrupt the away side. The home side grabbed two goals in quick succession following two punts into the area.
With only ten minutes left the Mallards started to get themselves back into the tie.
McGrath was unlucky not put them ahead when his long-range effort just went over the bar.
The industrious McGrath was at the centre of everything that the Mallards were creating. The Sky Blues left back was struggling to deal with his determined runs on the right.
Despite not grabbing that elusive winning goal, the young Mallards can be proud of their battling performance against an aggressive and physical Sky Blues side.
It was a well-deserved point for the young Mallards with stand out performers Noble, Holder and Irvine.
Next up for the young Mallards is a home fixture against Limavady at the Bawnacre on Saturday. Kick off is 11am.

Training this week is at Fisher Park on Wednesday evening. 7pm to 8.30pm. Attendance is essential if players want to be selected for team!
I will be ringing George Elliott this evening and should be at first trial to have a chat with him as well. Eight goals for rampant Mallards Ballinamallard Youth travelled to Limavady to face Maiden City in their opening league fixture of the Under 12 season.
The young Mallards had enjoyed pre season wins over Crusaders and Dergview and were looking forward to their opening game.
It took the Mallards only two minutes to open the scoring. Ryan Keaney pounced on a mistake in the box and rifled home to make it 1-0.
Shortly after it was two nil to the Fermanagh side. Niall Owens weaved his magic on the left and played in Jake Browne, who calmly chipped the goalkeeper from twenty five yards out.
Next chance for the Mallards was from a long-range free kick. Callum Jones shaved the cross bar from forty yards out.
It was three nil shortly after, as Jake Browne saw his shot parried by the Maiden City keeper and Darragh McGrath followed up to drill in number three.
The Mallards continued to add to the score-line as Jake Irvine on his competitive debut for the Mallards rifled in from twenty-five yards out.
A fifth was added only minutes later. McGrath worked his way to the by-line and Ryan Keaney was on hand to grab his second of the game.
Niall Owens grabbed the sixth when his shot squirmed past the keeper.
It was seventh heaven for the Blues as they scored their best goal of the game. The move started from defence and Michael Gallagher played a superb pass to Jake Irvine who played in Jake Browne who grabbed his second to make it 7-0.
The final goal of the game came from Curtis Coalter who side footed home after superb work by the industrious Ryan Keaney.
Ballinamallard now face Magherafelt Sky Blues next weekend and they will hope to continue their good form.
Manager Sam Gamble was extremely happy with the performance as the young Mallards played some superb passing football and took their chances.

Disappointing result today in our final pre season fixture. We dominated proceedings in the opening twenty minutes but somehow went into half time three goals to nil down.
Anybody who was there will say the exact same. We played some great football but simply could not get that elusive goal to kick start our game.
Stand out performers were Jake Irvine, Darragh McGrath and Alex Holder.
Lessons learnt from both coaching staff and players.
Big game now away in Limavady next weekend in opening league match. Only 15 players will travel so if anyone misses out training will continue with Neil Upton on Saturday morning at mini soccer.
Once again guys believe in yourself. We can achieve our goals!

Sam Mallards travel to play Crusaders at day out at Seaview Ballinamallard Under 12s travelled to Belfast to play Crusaders as they continued their pre season build up ahead of the National Youth League.
It was a wonderful day out for the young Mallards who faced their Belfast rivals at a revamped Seaview. The ground is now a 4000 all seater stadium.
After their own friendly fixture in the morning, the Mallards stayed to watch former Mallard Grant Hutchinson in action for Carrick Rangers against Crusaders.
The young Mallards enjoyed another competitive friendly fixture against a talented Crusaders outfit.
Following three periods of twenty minutes, the young Fermanagh outfit enjoyed a 2-0 victory over their Belfast rivals.
Ballinamallard opened the scoring with only ten minutes left to play. Callum Jones whipped in one of his trademark corners and the diminutive Michael Gallagher was on hand to powerfully head home.
Moments later the Mallards doubled the lead and killed off any chance of a Crusaders revival. A superb move involving Irvine and Browne saw Ryan Keaney put through on goal and he rifled an unstoppable shot into the top corner, to leave it 2-0 to the young Ballinamallard outfit.
It was a wonderful experience for the young Mallards, who thoroughly enjoyed their day out playing on the Seaview 4G pitch and the Irish Premier League game in the afternoon.
The entire panel of 17 players all received plenty of game time, as manager Sam Gamble starts to finalise his starting eleven ahead of their opening day fixture against Maiden City Academy on 3rd September.

I currently write a blog myself on Northern Irish football.
With the lads first ever season at 11 a-side starting on the 3rd September, all details such as training times, venues, fixtures and other announcements will be available on this site.
